Prolozone Questions
Are PRP and Prolotherapies Safe?

Yes.

Autologous (patient derived) PRP has been used for over 30 years as an aid in recovery following certain surgical, orthopaedic and dental procedures. There are thousands of research articles published on the safety of PRP. Because your own blood is used, there is no risk of a transmissible infection and a very low risk of allergic reaction.

What is Prolozone and Prolozone Therapy?

In simple terms, Prolozone is an injection of ozone gas combined with other natural medicines. When ozone is injected into the body, it increases the blood supply to that specific area. In doing so, it also promotes an increased flow of healthy nutrients, enhancing the natural healing cycle of your body.

PRP Questions
How Many Treatments of PRP / Prolotherapy are Required?

The response to treatment varies. Most patients require one to three treatments. Patients are evaluated to see how they will respond to the injections. For more severe problems, additional injections may be necessary. Some people respond immediately, but most of the time, it takes approximately 8-12 weeks to get optimal response to the treatment.

Is Prolotherapy Therapy right for me?

If you suffer from chronic pain, arthritis, an injured ligament, or tendon, and traditional methods have not provided relief, then PRP/Prolozone therapy may be a solution. The procedure is less aggressive, less invasive, and less expensive than surgery. It may aid to heal tissue with minimal or no scarring. It will relieve chronic pain and alleviate further degeneration of the tissues. There will be an initial evaluation with Your medical provider to see if PRP/Prolozone therapy is right for you.

Are there any special instructions?

You are restricted from the use of non-steroid anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) one week prior to the procedure and one month after. Initially, the procedure may cause some localized soreness and discomfort. Your medical provider typically orders a mild narcotic for this post-procedure discomfort, however most patients only require some extra-strength Tylenol to help with the pain. Ice and heat may be applied to the area as needed, after the first 36 hours.

What should you expect after the injection?

After the injection, there is an increasing discomfort for approximately 1-3 days. The positive effects of the injection can occur within one week after the injection. This usually happens with torn tendons/ligaments and bursitis. With an osteoarthritic condition, it takes about 8-12 weeks to respond. We recommend normal activity with no extra exercise for the first 48 hours. After 3-4 days, you will start light exercise (or physical therapy) progressing to full activity in four to eight weeks.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Generally speaking, aside from the initial pain at the injection site, the patient will not experience any discomfort. Less than 10% of (mostly lumbar puncture) patients have developed a minor fever, headache, nausea or vomiting. However , these side effects have never lasted more than three days and usually resolve within 24 hours. No long term negative side effects have been reported.

How does the process work and how long until I see results?

Essentially, stem cells are progenitor cells which are capable of regeneration and differentiation into a wide range of specialized cell types. Once injected, stem cells follow inflammatory signals from damaged tissues and have multiple ways of repairing these damaged areas.

The mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) we are using are considered to be multipotent (they can transform into different cell types but cannot form an organ) but not pluripotent. In the body, these cells Do NOT function by transforming into different cell types or tissues.

They act via anti-inflammatory activity, immune modulating capacity, and the ability to stimulate regeneration.   We go through a very high throughput screening process to find cells that we know have the best anti-inflammatory activity, the best immune modulating capacity, and the best ability to stimulate regeneration.

If you would like to learn more about treatments with MSCs, we recommend reading Dr. Riordan’s book: https://www.amazon.com/Stem-Cell-Therapy-Disrupting-Transforming-ebook/dp/B071GRNQPX

Does smoking or drinking affect the therapy?

Alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking can both be detrimental to new progenitor stem cells. It is highly advisable that people do not smoke or drink during their treatment.

Will I be prescribed any drugs?

Typically, the doctors do not prescribe any medication as a part of your treatment. However, they do advise a clinical nutrition regime that may be administered intravenously, injected into the muscles, or subcutaneous (under the tongue).
